The North Shore Family Respite Centre Project

The Health and Home Care Society of BC (Care BC) is a not-for-profit organization working in partnership with the City of North Vancouver (City) and the Catalyst Community Developments Society (Catalyst), to build a Family Respite Centre (FRC) on East 2nd and St. Georges Ave in Lower Lonsdale.

The FRC will provide temporary Adult Day Care and Overnight Respite Care for seniors diagnosed with dementia, who are living at home, thereby enabling their caregivers to get the periods of “respite” or the rest they require to continue to care for their loved ones at home.  Too frequently, the alternative is a visit to the emergency, followed by admission into an acute care hospital bed, and placement in a long term care bed.

The FRC will be owned and operated for 60 years by Care BC and located on the ground level of a 6-storey tower in a custom-designed, homelike setting which will include 18 private bedrooms with ensuite, and 25 Adult Day Care Program spaces. Eighty-nine affordable housing units, which will be owned and operated by Catalyst, will be constructed above the FRC.

Construction is well underway with completion anticipated in the Fall of 2025.

The Care BC Foundation, the fundraising arm of the Society, has fundraised over $8 million to date of the estimated $12 million total project costs.
